Like most tourists visiting Andhra Pradesh for the first time, I made a list of popular places to visit in Vijayawada. Kanaka Durga Temple, Prakasam Barrage, Bhavani Island, and Undavalli Caves were some of them. I was expecting to finish my visit to these places within a day.
What I didn’t expect was that some of my favourite memories would come from places and experiences that weren’t part of any sightseeing checklist. Beyond the city’s well-known attractions, I found peaceful riverside views, bustling local markets, delicious food, and neighbourhoods that revealed a different side of Vijayawada. By the end of my trip, I realised the city’s charm extended far beyond its famous landmarks.
Vijayawada felt more relaxed away from the tourist hotspots
Indeed, the places of interest were quite enjoyable to visit. However, what made my trip to Vijayawada even more interesting was that once I moved away from the crowded places, I was able to appreciate some tranquil moments in the early mornings, when people were walking around the Krishna River.
I stopped visiting one place after another, as I found that other things made me familiar with the routine of the city of Vijayawada.
Vijayawada’s local food became one of the highlights of my trip
I expected to enjoy Andhra cuisine, but I didn’t realise how much of the experience would come from small eateries rather than well-known restaurants. Every meal introduced something new, from spicy Andhra thalis and fluffy idlis to crisp dosas and local sweets.
The welcoming hospitality made the meals even more memorable. Conversations with restaurant owners often led to recommendations for hidden spots that weren’t mentioned in travel guides.
Vijayawada’s markets showed me a different side of the city
During one afternoon, instead of planning another monument visit, I chose to explore some of the nearby markets. The vibrant shops, fresh vegetables, traditional clothing, spices, and handicrafts helped create a vibrant environment.
Exploring the markets gave me a glimpse into the city’s everyday culture. Even without buying much, it became one of the most enjoyable parts of my visit.
Staying in a hotel in Vijayawada made exploring easier
My greatest decision of all was booking hotels in Vijayawada with good connectivity to the city’s attractions and neighbourhoods. This allowed me not to spend too much time travelling around the city. As a result, I could access cafes, markets, riverbanks, and cultural sites easily.
That flexibility encouraged me to explore beyond the usual tourist circuit and discover places I might otherwise have missed.
Vijayawada evenings by the Krishna River became my favourite moments
As most tourists made their way back after seeing the sights, I found myself returning to the river in the evening hours. The sight of the ever-changing colours of the sky above the Krishna River as the city lit up, made for a calm and soothing environment after a long day.
There was no specific programme to follow. Just sitting by the river and observing everyday life turned out to be the most memorable part of my trip.
Vijayawada’s welcoming people completed the experience
More than the tourist spots, what caught my attention was the hospitality shown by the people. Every time I needed directions, conversed with shopkeepers, or got tips from residents, the reception was always warm and friendly.
Those small interactions added a personal touch that no guidebook could have prepared me for.
Final thoughts
I went to Vijayawada hoping to remember its well-known monuments. Of course, I did not overlook their significance, but what touched me most was something beyond the known sites. The local cuisine, bustling markets, evenings by the river, and friendly locals, made me realise another aspect of the city that tourists may not see.
These famous places should certainly be visited. Nevertheless, if there is time, I would spend an extra day exploring beyond the popular sightseeing spots. Like me, choose a hotel in Vijayawada that offers easy access to the city and leaves time for exploration, as unplanned moments can become the most memorable part of your tour.
